If all the years of hammering the importance of internet security home have taught us anything, it’s that people simply never learn.

That’s probably a slightly harsh assessment – after all, there are new users taking to the internet every day, from youngsters to grandparents – but it can still be a little surprising to see people falling for very similar scams on Facebook over and over again. Today, a new wave of the “Shocking Video” style links is doing the rounds on the popular social networking site and despite the similarity to previous scams, people are still clicking the links.

The scams work by placing an enticing link into an infected user’s status update, making itself visible to all their connected users. The current scam features hooks like “I am shocked!!! I’m NEVER texting AGAIN since I found this out. Video here: http://bit.ly/c4SDyh – Worldwide scandal!” amongst others and rather than simply take the user to whatever it is they’re looking for once the link is clicked, they will be sent to a fake application which takes the user through an awful lot of different surveys and so on, intended to acquire as much personal data as possible.

As always, the best advice we can give is to simply not click on any suspicious links, keep your passwords secret and under no circumstances, let any app install to your social networks that you’re not 100% sure of. If you have fallen for it, remove the application from your account, delete the status update and repeat 100 times: ‘I will not click dodgy looking links’.
